Banos

Weekend just gone I travelled with my wife and a group of friends from Quito to Banos, a small town about 400km south of Quito that sits at the base of an active volcano called Volcan Tungurahua.

Quite simply, stunning.

You can not see Banos in this photo (stolen off wiki, as my camera was stolen last week) but it sits at the bottom left of the volcano. At the moment it is errupting 30 times an hour.

Close by there are numerous beautiful waterfalls one of which we visited called Pailon del Diablo, or in English, The Devils Cauldron.

You might have seen this waterfall in the movie Proof of Life. If you weren't aware the movie was filmed in Ecuador.

This was about a 30 min quad bike ride from Banos and a 20 min down hill walk through the rainforrest. Incredible.

Couldn't recommend Banos more highly to anyone floating through the region.

Leaving Quito this week unfortunately, back to Lima.

Ecuador has been quite a surprise. When I travelled through this region about 3 years ago I didn't have Equador on the list, and thought all it had going for it was The Galapagos. I class it as a more beautiful country to visit than Peru.
